Introduction

This artwork is a modern wide-rim art appreciation plate with a standard round silhouette. The rim is decorated with three-dimensional textured relief, paired with symmetric small notches to enrich the outline, breaking the monotonous shape of traditional flat plates. The flat and spacious plate surface provides ample space for painting creation. The textured rim and flat painted surface create layered textural contrast. Suitable for both wall hanging and tabletop display, it is a mainstream flat decorative vessel form of contemporary art ceramics. The plate features a gentle curved body with even wall thickness, balancing stable hanging weight capacity and unrestrained visual presentation.
The plate surface centers on freehand pomegranate flowers with a semi-circular encircling composition. Red flower vines stretch from the rim toward the center, arranged in alternating dense and sparse clusters with translucent blank space. Pomegranate flowers symbolize prosperity, vitality and blessed descendants, a classic auspicious motif in Chinese tradition. Two thick curved grey textured bands divide the frame, balancing the delicate floral painting with rough heavy three-dimensional texture to strengthen visual tension through contrast of softness and strength. Large underglaze red washes shape flower petals, while fine underglaze blue lines outline leaves and central flower veins, forming rich interlaced red-blue layers. Integrating modern abstract composition and traditional Chinese freehand flower-and-bird painting, the work takes porcelain as paper and pigment as ink. Combined with hand-sculpted rim texture, it realizes cross-media ceramic expression merging flat painting and three-dimensional sculpture. Ample central blank space embodies oriental blank-space aesthetics, with complementary warm-cool colors and concave-convex textures delivering rich artistic expression.

Breaking the traditional creative formula of single flat painting on decorative plates, this work integrates three crafts — three-dimensional slip sculpting, underglaze blue and underglaze red — on one vessel with high composite technical barriers. Its composition introduces modern abstract partitioning aesthetics, balancing delicate flowers with rough grey textured curves to reinterpret traditional auspicious floral themes with contemporary artistic language. Distinct from ordinary flat porcelain plates, the three-dimensional texture delivers dual tactile and visual layers, presenting strong artistic tension when hung for display. Rooted in Jingdezhen’s thousand-year craft heritage of underglaze blue and red, the work combines multiple artistic languages including sculpture, ink painting and high-temperature pigment painting. It holds multi-purpose value for wall decoration, tabletop display and handmade ceramic collection, serving as a premium comprehensive contemporary art porcelain integrating sculptural quality, painting quality, craftsmanship and decorative appeal.
