Introduction
Jingdezhen Ceramic vase

This artwork features a tall, modified cylindrical Ceramic Vase with an elongated body that gently tapers toward the base. A clean, level rim and substantial foot provide visual balance and structural stability. The continuous vertical profile emphasizes height, giving the Ceramic Vase a strong architectural presence. Its smooth curves and restrained proportions create a minimalist yet commanding silhouette suitable for contemporary interiors. The design also provides generous vertical space for expressive floral painting without making the overall composition feel crowded.
A band of three-dimensional vertical relief runs along one side of the Ceramic Vase, dividing its surface into two primary decorative zones. The contrast between the smooth painted area and the raised, recessed relief introduces depth, rhythm, and tactile interest. This arrangement avoids the visual flatness often associated with conventional porcelain painting. As the viewer moves around the Ceramic Vase, the shifting relationship between painted imagery, sculpted texture, light, and shadow creates a continually changing visual experience.
With its tall and refined proportions, the Ceramic Vase is designed as a large-scale decorative porcelain artwork for entryways, hotel lobbies, exhibition halls, reception areas, galleries, and tall display cabinets. It can be positioned alone as a statement piece or paired with coordinating porcelain artworks to create a balanced interior arrangement. The generous blank areas and vertical composition make the Ceramic Vase particularly suitable for modern, neo-Chinese, minimalist, and contemporary luxury spaces.
The Ceramic Vase is hand-thrown from dense, high-white porcelain clay made with Jingdezhen kaolin. Vertical relief textures are built along one side using applied slip and careful hand carving. The entire vessel is then covered with a soft bluish-white transparent glaze and fired at approximately 1300°C in a reducing atmosphere. This high-temperature process helps create a strong, compact porcelain body, a smooth glaze surface, and the subtle translucency associated with high-quality Jingdezhen porcelain.

This Ceramic Vase combines three demanding decorative techniques: three-dimensional relief carving, graduated cobalt underglaze-blue painting, and expressive copper-red underglaze decoration. Linear grid marks and scattered cobalt dots form an abstract background, while variations in pigment concentration produce multiple shades of blue. The underglaze-red flowers introduce warmth and visual energy, balancing the cooler blue tones. Together, these elements create a layered composition that unites sculpture, painting, and natural kiln transformation.
During firing, the copper-red pigment develops naturally diffused reddish-brown tones, flowing edges, and subtle variations that resemble splashed ink on absorbent paper. Gentle glaze movement near the lower edges of the petals adds spontaneity and prevents the floral imagery from appearing overly controlled. Because copper red is highly sensitive to kiln temperature, oxygen levels, and flame conditions, the final appearance of each Ceramic Vase cannot be exactly duplicated. Every finished piece therefore possesses its own distinctive color transitions and surface character.
Successfully combining underglaze blue and copper red on one Ceramic Vase requires precise control of pigment preparation, application thickness, kiln atmosphere, and firing schedule. The additional relief structure further complicates production because raised areas heat, shrink, and receive glaze differently from flat surfaces. Excessive pigment may run or blur, while insufficient pigment may appear weak after firing. Deformation, glaze movement, uneven coloration, and firing cracks can all reduce the number of acceptable finished pieces.
This Ceramic Vase breaks away from the limitations of purely flat porcelain painting by bringing relief sculpture, underglaze blue, and underglaze red together on a single vessel. Its composition reinterprets traditional auspicious floral imagery through modern vertical divisions, abstract grid patterns, and expressive color diffusion. Instead of directly reproducing classical porcelain decoration, the Ceramic Vase transforms Jingdezhen’s established techniques into a contemporary artistic language that is accessible to both Chinese and international audiences.

The tall cylindrical silhouette also responds to the needs of modern high-ceiling interiors. Unlike the broad and visually heavy forms often associated with antique-style porcelain, this Ceramic Vase appears upright, clean, and spatially efficient. Its vertical form can visually heighten a room, complement architectural columns, or fill narrow display areas without overwhelming the surrounding furnishings. When illuminated from the side, the relief surface produces soft shadows that emphasize the hand-carved details and add further dimensional depth.
Rooted in Jingdezhen’s long tradition of underglaze-blue and copper-red porcelain, the Ceramic Vase brings together several artistic languages, including sculptural modeling, freehand ink-wash expression, abstract composition, and high-temperature pigment painting. It offers multiple forms of value as an exhibition object, an interior furnishing, a cultural gift, and a collectible handmade artwork. Combining sculptural presence, painterly expression, technical difficulty, and decorative versatility, this Ceramic Vase represents a premium example of contemporary Jingdezhen art porcelain.
