The Art of Half-Cut Clay: Unique Carving Craftsmanship of Millennium Jingdezhen Porcelain

Rooted in Jingdezhen and supported by university ceramic academic research, we (Magic Cube Ceramics) adhere to the millennium handmade porcelain heritage. Among numerous ceramic decorative techniques, Half-Cut Clay (Bandao Ni) is an exclusive and irreplaceable carving craft originated only in Jingdezhen. Inherited and optimized for thousands of years, this fluid and exquisite knife technique perfectly integrates oriental delicate aesthetics and handmade craftsmanship, becoming one of the most iconic artistic symbols of high-end Jingdezhen handmade porcelain.

Millennium Heritage: The Artistic Foundation of Jingdezhen Handmade Porcelain

Known as the global porcelain capital, Jingdezhen has maintained endless kiln fires for thousands of years. It dominates the world ceramic art with its premium porcelain features: white as jade, bright as mirror, thin as paper, and resonant as chime. For millennia, Jingdezhen has absorbed the essence of ancient kiln craftsmanship from all dynasties, integrated northern and southern porcelain-making advantages, and formed a complete and sophisticated handmade porcelain system.

Compared with other ancient kilns, Jingdezhen’s core competitiveness lies not only in premium clay and pure glaze, but also in exclusive handmade decorative techniques. Evolving from Song Dynasty carved porcelain craftsmanship, Half-Cut Clay carving is a classic and uniquely inherited art, representing the precious treasure of Jingdezhen handmade art.

What Is Half-Cut Clay: Jingdezhen’s Original Exclusive Carving Technique

Half-Cut Clay is an original carving technique exclusive to Jingdezhen. Different from ordinary uniform-depth carving, it features a unique core:one cut, two layers, one trace with varied depth. Craftsmen use special iron carving knives to pattern dry plain clay bodies. Every single line forms an asymmetrical slope with deep and shallow sides, creating natural undulating layers.

Originating from Yingqing carved porcelain art of the Song Dynasty, this technique abandons rigid and complicated decorations and pursues a concise, vivid and unrestrained artistic style. All lines feature virtual-real contrast and proper spacing. Without redundant embellishments, the subtle changes of knife pressure endow flat patterns with three-dimensional raised texture, achieving both strength and elegance.

Craft Features: Flowing and Exquisite Knife Art

The artistic charm of Half-Cut Clay entirely relies on craftsmen’s profound manual skills. The whole knife movement is flexible, unrestrained and smooth like flowing water, without rigid traces, honored as a miraculous handmade craft in the ceramic industry.

After glazing and one-time high-temperature firing, the staggered carved traces form gentle light and shadow layers under the glaze. The shallow parts are translucent and moist, while the deep parts are subtle and profound. The flowing light and shadow along the vessel’s radian creates an ice-jade like elegant effect, perfectly interpreting the ultimate minimalist oriental aesthetics.

Two Main Categories: Plain Half-Cut Clay & Blue-and-White Half-Cut Clay

Plain Half-Cut Clay: Pure Jade Texture & Exquisite Transparency

Based on pure white porcelain bodies without extra painting, plain Half-Cut Clay relies purely on knife craftsmanship to shape patterns. The finished products feature jade-like white porcelain, glossy transparent glaze, thin and delicate bodies, as well as smooth and vivid carved lines.

Under light irradiation, the vessels are translucent and elegant with distinct three-dimensional lines. The staggered light and shadow fully highlight the superior body and glaze quality of Jingdezhen white porcelain. Minimalist and high-grade, it is widely suitable for tea ware, decorative porcelain and other scenarios.

Blue-and-White Half-Cut Clay: Integrated Ancient & Modern Chinese Aesthetics

Blue-and-White Half-Cut Clay is an innovative integration of traditional craftsmanship and modern aesthetics. Craftsmen adjust painting and carving according to vessel shapes, combining classic blue-and-white painting with three-dimensional Half-Cut Clay carving. It reshapes the expression of blue-and-white art through modern composition, blank space design and brush rhythm.

The interwoven blue and white tones get rid of the rigidity and dullness of traditional blue-and-white porcelain. Lively and vivid in style, it retains the classical charm of oriental blue-and-white art while possessing modern fashionable texture, creating a new style of blue-and-white porcelain suitable for contemporary life and global aesthetics.

Artistic Core: Oriental Aesthetics Combining Realism and Freehand Brushwork

In terms of decorative expression, Half-Cut Clay breaks through single realistic techniques and forms a diverse art system integrating realism, freehand brushwork and abstraction. It includes both delicate detailed carving and unrestrained freehand lines. The perfect combination of virtuality and reality brings rich and inclusive artistic expression.

Different from niche and aloof ceramic art, Half-Cut Clay balances artistry and practicality. With simple, exquisite and highly adaptable techniques, it can be applied to both high-end decorative art porcelain and daily-use ceramics, making it the most life-oriented and public-aesthetic friendly handmade carving craft in Jingdezhen.
